job description - Student Support Officer

  • The role has a strong administrative component including managing payments to students and recording all interactions on the scholarship management system. The ideal candidate needs a strong, authentic commitment to supporting young, mainly Black South Africans achieving their potential both academically and personally.

Role Description / Key Performance Areas

  • Responsible for providing psycho-social support to a group of approximately 60 students throughout their time on the OMET scholarship programme.
  • Provide Student Support related activities to students pursuing studies in the Higher Education Sector including contributing to design and delivery of workshops/ webinars.
  • Ensure all student related results are received and analysed to amend support required.
  • Responsible for ensuring related payments for tuition, meals and transport allowances are paid timeously.
  • Have in person 1:1 sessions with all students in the cohort at their institutions of learning.
  • Build and hold strategic relationships with critical university staff at the relevant institutions where relevant in order to promote access to support on campuses.
  • Updated records in the online OMET system for reporting purposes, ensuring all student records are accurate and updated timeously.
  • Attention to detail and a strong commitment to data integrity.
  • A strong communicator with extraordinary self-management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and alone.
  • Support the Programme Manager and Head of OMET in observing all good governance practices as prescribed by the Trust Deed.

Qualification And Experience Required

  • Experience in working with and supporting young adults, ideally in a higher education setting.
  • Industrial / Organisational / Psychology / Social Science Degree
  • Minimum of 3-years of experience in a learning and development role with a focus on shaping young talent.
  • Experience in programme design, including monitoring and evaluation.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Facilitation of workshop experience both in person and virtually.
  • Knowledge of working on a data base system – effective use of technology
  • Excellent repot writing skills.
  • Public speaking
  • Focused attention to detail (qualitative and quantitative)
  • Have a coaching and | or counselling background.
  • A team player with a passion for excellence and a sense of urgency who knows how to follow through with processes and project timelines.
  • Strong multi-tasking, organizational, and time management skills - used to juggling many roles at once.
  • Excellent MS Office skills with a strong focus on MS Excel (preferred).
  • Have good interpersonal skills with the ability to interact at all levels.
  • Appropriate knowledge of the management of confidential information.
  • Ability to analyse and integrate information and data.
  • Excellent planning and organizing competence.
  • Comfortable with travelling alone to institutions, including driving.
  • Beyond qualification, a genuine commitment to supporting young adults achieve their personal and professional ambitious is equally important.

Preference will be given to suitably qualified candidates in line with the Employment Equity Plan of Old Mutual South Africa and the specific business unit in question.
