job description - Health Safety Officer

Essential Qualifications, Experience and Skills:


  • National Senior Certificate / Matric
  • National Diploma/ Certificate or Equivalent in SHE Management
  • 5 Years' experience in Safety, Health and Environment roles.
  • Mining / Construction safety experience would be advantageous.
  • Risk Assessor competency/techniques would be an added advantage (SWIFT, HAZOP and FMECA, WRAC and HIRA, etc.).
  • Incident Investigator competency would be an added advantage.
  • Good understanding of OHSA, MHSA, and Construction regulations with experience in the operational application of legislation.
  • Experience monitoring and auditing contractor safety performances.
  • Experience implementing Health, and Safety requirements in a technical, complex industrial environment.
  • Good MS Office skills
  • Fluency in English

Key Result Areas:


  • Compile and maintain safety files for customers and tender applications
  • Conduct risk assessments on current and new sites when required and identify risks
  • Review Contractor Risk Assessment. Visit sites to assess work for compliance with specifications
  • Provide SHE improvement proposals, corrective action and resources for corrective action
  • Lead the evaluation and appointment of SHE-related suppliers based on requirements
  • Conduct SHE Committee Meetings
  • Investigation and Corrective Action Reporting
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly SHE reports, statistics and presentations
  • Report to the National Operations Manager on corrective action taken by Contractors
  • Ensure regular emergency response exercises and drills are conducted
  • Supervise the regular inspection of firefighting, safety and emergency response equipment at sites
  • Review and amend standards, specifications, policies, and procedures for approval.
  • Monitor contractor performance and work sites by conducting continuous site visits and audits
  • Establish Standard Operating Procedures and Safe Work Instructions for tasks
