job description - High Voltage Engineer


  • Design and implement high voltage electrical systems for power distribution units, switchgears, transformers, and backup power systems.
  • Conduct thorough analyses and simulations to ensure the reliability and efficiency of high voltage systems, optimizing for both performance and energy conservation.
  • Collaborate with the project management team to integrate high voltage engineering solutions with overall data centre design and construction plans.
  • Oversee the installation, testing, and commissioning of high voltage equipment, ensuring compliance with national and international standards, as well as industry best practices.
  • Develop and implement maintenance protocols for high voltage systems, including predictive and preventive maintenance strategies, to minimize downtime and extend equipment lifespan.
  • Provide expert guidance on high voltage safety protocols, ensuring all work is performed in accordance with strict safety standards to protect personnel and infrastructure.
  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in high voltage engineering, renewable energy sources, and sustainable practices to continuously improve data centre operations.
  • Liaise with vendors, suppliers, and contractors, managing relationships to ensure high-quality equipment procurement and service delivery.
  • Offer technical support and training to in-house teams, enhancing their understanding and capabilities in managing high voltage systems.
  • Assess and approve risk assessments and method statements and ensure compliance on site.
  • Develop the Health & Safety high risk matrix and produce the risk assessments and method statements required to execute the project in a safe manner.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree or higher is preferable.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in high voltage engineering, with at least 5 years focused on critical infrastructure projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration or equivalent professional registration is highly desirable.

Knowledge

  • In-depth knowledge of high voltage equipment, standards, and regulations applicable in South Africa and internationally.
  • Proficient in using engineering design software for high voltage system design and analysis.
  • Excellent project management skills, with a proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage complex projects under tight deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to present technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites across South Africa and work flexible hours as project demands dictate.
